Door installation cost = the door (by type and material) + installation labor + frame, trim, hardware and removal; installing one pre-hung interior door is about $560 at US-average prices, with the old door removed (range $470 to $640), and a fiberglass entry door with new hardware is about $1,200, from $760 to $2,600. HomeAdvisor's average is $802 for an interior door and $1,457 for an exterior one.
How the door installation cost is calculated
Interior doors are priced by style from Fixr (January 2025), which publishes installed prices from $191 for a bifold to $2,000 for French doors. Exterior doors are priced from HomeAdvisor (June 2026) as the door itself by material plus installation labor of $130 to $580 (HomeAdvisor: $30 to $90 an hour for 2 to 4 hours; Fixr: $200 to $800), or as a complete door for double, French and sliding patio types. Frame, trim, hardware, sidelights and removal are separate lines; your state's wages (BLS) and goods prices (BEA) scale materials and labor.

Worked example: one pre-hung interior door
The typical installed price is $520, and hauling the old door away adds about $40 (HomeAdvisor: $20 to $50 for removal and disposal on an interior door). Total: $560. Six doors are about $3,350. A pocket door is about $1,500, since it needs the wall opened up. A new frame ($220 to $370), casing ($20 to $100 per door) and a knob set ($20 to $200) take the single pre-hung door to about $980.
Interior vs exterior
An exterior door costs more because it is heavier, needs weatherproofing and a lock, and takes longer to hang. The door only, by material (HomeAdvisor): steel $150 to $1,400, fiberglass $150 to $3,000, wood $500 to $3,000 and wrought iron $1,500 to $13,000. A single entry door with hardware and removal costs about $980 in steel, $1,200 in fiberglass and $1,750 in wood. Labor for an exterior door is about $360 of that (HomeAdvisor: 2 to 4 hours; Fixr: 3 to 7 hours).
Double, French and sliding patio doors
HomeAdvisor prices these as complete doors: double $1,250 to $6,030, French $900 to $5,800 and sliding patio $600 to $5,000. With hardware and removal the calculator gives about $3,800, $2,450 and $1,900. Sidelights add $1,600 to $4,600 (HomeAdvisor). Fixr notes that a single slab door is about half the price of a double.
Labor only
Turn on Labor only: I already bought the door and the door itself drops out of the price; a fiberglass entry door then costs about $520 in labor, hardware and removal. A handyperson charges $30 to $40 an hour and a door contractor $40 to $90 (HomeAdvisor).
What raises the price
Replacing a frame ($130 to $380 for an exterior frame, $200 to $650 in HomeAdvisor's general guide), changing the opening size, sidelights and transoms, a heavy or custom door, rot behind the old door and a high-wage state. Reusing the existing frame and hanging a standard 3 ft by 6 ft 8 in door is the cheapest job.
DIY or a pro
An interior pre-hung door is a good DIY job: it needs a level, shims and patience, and mistakes show at the gap. An exterior door adds flashing, weatherproofing and the security of the lock, so many people hire that part. Doing it yourself removes labor, but the calculator's I bought the door switch shows the split.
Permit
Swapping a door in the same opening rarely needs one. Changing the size of an exterior opening usually does; Fixr mentions a permit of "a couple hundred dollars" and gives no fee, so none is priced here. Ask your building department.
