Angi's average window project is $7,347, Fixr's average is $800 per window and Homewyse puts a standard vinyl replacement at $662 to $1,012 per window in September 2026. Wood frames roughly double the window part of the price, and full-frame installation nearly doubles the total.
How the window replacement cost is calculated
Each window type has an installed price range from HomeAdvisor and Fixr for a standard vinyl, double-pane unit. The calculator splits that into the window itself and the installation: HomeAdvisor puts labor at about 15% of a window job and Fixr at about 30%, so 22.5% is removed and the installation is priced on its own from Angi's figures. Frame material and glass then scale the window part, and your state's goods prices (BEA) and construction wages (BLS) scale materials and labor.

Worked example: ten double-hung windows
A double-hung window's typical installed price is $675. The window part is $675 × 0.775 = $523, installation as an insert adds $200 (Angi: $100 to $300 per window), so each window is about $723 and ten are $7,230. A permit adds about $180 (Fixr: $50 to $300), for $7,400 in total. The same ten windows in a two-story house come to about $7,900, because half of them are upstairs where labor moves toward the top of the range; Angi notes upper-story access can push labor to $600 or more per window.
Vinyl, fiberglass, wood or aluminum
Frame factors are the mean of HomeAdvisor's average price per window (aluminum $450, vinyl $550, fiberglass $1,100, wood $1,250) and Fixr's midpoints (aluminum $500, vinyl $575, fiberglass $950, wood $1,300), relative to vinyl.

The Cost vs Value report shows a narrower gap for its upscale projects: ten 3 × 5 ft windows cost $22,073 in vinyl and $26,781 in clad wood in 2025, both with custom-color exteriors and the exterior trim matched to the house. ENERGY STAR notes that vinyl and fiberglass frames insulate well and that wood frames are often clad in aluminum or vinyl outside to cut maintenance.
Glass and installation method
Triple-pane glass is priced at 1.88 times double-pane on the window part: HomeAdvisor's midpoints give 1.72 and Fixr's 2.04. Ten triple-pane double-hung windows come to about $12,000. Impact or laminated glass adds $100 to $800 per window (Fixr).
An insert (retrofit) window goes into the existing frame; Angi puts the labor at $100 to $300 per window. A full-frame replacement removes the old frame down to the rough opening and costs $180 to $1,500 per window in labor, which takes the ten-window example to about $13,800. Full-frame is the right call when the frame or sill is rotten or you want to change the window's size; check the old frames before choosing insert pricing, and keep the "rotted sills" contingency on if you are unsure. Angi reports hidden structural repairs of $100 to $2,000 on window jobs.
Tax credits in 2026
The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit covered ENERGY STAR windows purchased and installed from January 1, 2023, to December 31, 2025, according to ENERGY STAR. Windows installed in 2026 no longer qualify for it, so check your state and utility for local rebates instead.
How to cut the cost
Replace all windows on a side of the house at once rather than one at a time, choose inserts where frames are sound, and stay with vinyl double-pane low-E unless your climate justifies more.
