Vinyl siding is sold in cartons of 2 squares, enough for 200 sq ft of wall. A 40 × 28 ft ranch with 9 ft walls and two gable ends has 1,260 sq ft to cover after the windows and doors, which is 1,386 sq ft with 10% waste: 167 double 4 in panels, or 7 cartons. Add 11 starter strips, 17 pieces of J-channel, 4 outside corner posts and about 14 lb of nails.
How the vinyl siding calculator counts boxes
The wall area comes from the perimeter times the wall height plus the gable triangles, minus the openings. Each panel covers its length times its exposure, and a carton holds a fixed number of panels.
panels = (net wall area × (1 + waste)) ÷ (panel length × exposure)
cartons = panels ÷ panels per carton, rounded up
A double 4 in panel shows two 4 in courses, 8 in in all, and is 12 ft 6 in long, so it covers 8.33 sq ft. 1,386 ÷ 8.33 = 166.3, rounded up to 167 panels. At 24 panels per carton that is 6.96, so 7 cartons.
Vinyl profiles and carton sizes
| Profile | Panel length | Exposure | Panels per carton | Coverage per carton |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Double 4 in | 12 ft 6 in | 8 in | 24 | 2 squares |
| Double 5 in | 12 ft | 10 in | 20 | 2 squares |
| Dutch lap double 4½ in | 12 ft 1 in | 9 in | 22 | 2 squares |
These are the carton contents in the 2026 Mastic specification guide, and they match the rule of thumb that a box of vinyl siding is 2 squares. Insulated vinyl is the exception: its cartons hold 1 square because the foam backing takes up the space. On the default house, double 5 in takes 139 panels and Dutch lap 153 panels, both 7 cartons.
Accessories, piece by piece
| Item | How it is measured | Default house |
|---|---|---|
| Starter strip, 12 ft 6 in | the whole base of the house | 136 ft, 11 pieces |
| J-channel, 12 ft 6 in | both sides and the head of each window and door, plus the gable rakes | 143 ft + 63 ft, 17 pieces |
| Outside corner posts, 10 ft | one wall height per corner | 4 posts |
| Inside corner posts, 10 ft | one wall height per inside corner | 0 |
| Utility (undersill) trim, 12 ft 6 in | under each window sill | 30 ft, 3 pieces |
| Nails | 0.01 lb per sq ft (VSI) | about 14 lb |
The Vinyl Siding Institute's installation manual sets the method: measure the linear feet around the base for starter, and multiply the siding square footage by 0.01 for pounds of roofing nails, staples or screws, or by 0.005 if you use aluminum nails (6.9 lb here). Corner posts that are longer than one piece overlap by ¾ in, so an 18 ft corner on a two-story house takes two 10 ft posts.
Soffit and fascia
Turn on soffit and enter the eave length and the overhang depth. Vinyl soffit panels are cut to fit between the wall and the fascia: the VSI manual measures from the wall to the fascia and subtracts ½ in for expansion. A 12 in overhang means 11½ in pieces, and a 12 ft panel gives 12 of them. Double 5 in soffit covers 10 in of eave per piece, so 80 ft of eave takes 96 pieces, which is 8 panels, plus 7 lengths of 12 ft F-channel along the wall and 7 lengths of aluminum fascia trim. Where the overhang is deeper than 16 in, the manual calls for nailing strips across the span.
A two-story example
A two-story house of 25 × 40 ft with 18 ft walls, two 6/12 gables, 15 windows and 2 doors has 2,340 sq ft of wall and 156 sq ft of gables. After 220 sq ft of openings that leaves 2,276 sq ft, 22.76 squares. With 10% waste it takes 301 double 4 in panels, 13 cartons, and every corner needs two 10 ft posts, 8 in all.
Why the waste allowance matters with vinyl
Vinyl panels need ¼ in of clearance at every opening, corner post and J-channel (⅜ in when it is installed below 40 °F), and end laps overlap about 1 in. Those gaps and laps plus the angled gable cuts are why 10% is the usual allowance. A plain rectangle can get by with less; a house with several gables, dormers or bump-outs needs 15%. Leftover full panels are worth keeping for repairs, since colors are discontinued.
Installing it right
Nail in the center of the slots, no more than 16 in apart on horizontal panels, and leave about 1/32 in between the nail head and the vinyl so the panel can move. Accessories are nailed every 8 to 12 in. The VSI manual's instruction "do not nail tight" matters more than any count on this page: a panel nailed tight buckles on the first hot day.
