Finish a Basement: Calculators in Order

A basement finish is a sequence, and the sequence is the plan: test for moisture, frame, run the wiring and plumbing, insulate, hang drywall, tape and finish, then paint, ceiling and floor. Doing the steps out of order costs the most time, so the calculators below follow the order you work in.

Moisture comes first because everything else sits on it. Tape a square of plastic sheet to the floor and the wall for a day or two: if the underside is wet, fix the water before you build anything. Then check the egress requirement if the room will be a bedroom, since the code wants a clear opening of at least 5.7 sq ft, and the ceiling height, since habitable rooms need 7 ft with a few allowed exceptions for beams and ducts.

Walls are framed off the concrete with a small gap, insulated with rigid foam or spray foam against the masonry rather than fiberglass batts that can hold moisture, and covered with drywall. Drywall is sold by the sheet, but joint compound, tape and screws are what people forget, and they add up across a whole basement.
