The math
  1. Materials

    $2,000 US average × 1.00 (US average goods prices) = $2,000

  2. Labor

    $2,000 US average × 1.00 (US average construction wages) = $2,000

  3. Typical total

    $2,000 + $2,000 = $4,000

400 sq ft × $10.00 per sq ft typical for broom, colored or exposed aggregate = $4,000. Labor is about half of it (HomeAdvisor). Concrete volume: area × 4 in ÷ 12 ÷ 27 = 4.94 cu yd.

Concrete driveway cost = area in square feet × installed price per square foot for the finish, plus extras such as removal, thickness and sealer; a 20 by 20 ft (400 sq ft) broom-finish driveway is about $4,000 at US-average prices, or $10 per sq ft, with a range of $3,600 to $4,400. Half of it is labor. A plain finish is about $2,800, and a stamped one about $6,000. This is also the cement driveway cost: cement is the binder, concrete is the finished slab you pay for.

How the concrete driveway cost is calculated

HomeAdvisor (June 2026) and Fixr (January 2025) publish the same installed price per square foot by finish for a standard 4 in slab. The calculator multiplies your area by that price and takes the finish band you choose: low end, typical or high end. HomeAdvisor says to plan on labor making up half of the bill, so half the price is scaled by your state's construction wages (BLS) and half by goods prices (BEA).

Cost = length × width × price per sq ft for the finish + extra thickness + removal + sealer + apron + heated add-on

FinishInstalled price per sq ft
Plain$6 to $8
Broom, textured, colored, exposed aggregate$8 to $12
Stamped, imprinted, slate$12 to $18
Saw cut, stained$18 to $20

Worked example: 20 by 20 ft, broom finish

400 sq ft × $10 per sq ft = $4,000. The low end of the range is 400 × $9 = $3,600 and the high end 400 × $11 = $4,400. Stamped concrete at $15 per sq ft is $6,000. Concrete for the slab is 400 sq ft × 4 in ÷ 12 ÷ 27 = 4.94 cubic yards; the concrete yard calculator adds waste and tells you what to order.

Cost by size

HomeAdvisor's size examples give the spread: 10 by 20 ft (200 sq ft) $1,600 to $3,000, 12 by 24 ft $2,300 to $4,300, 20 by 20 ft $3,200 to $6,000, 24 by 24 ft $4,600 to $8,600 and 24 by 36 ft $6,900 to $13,000. The size chips fill those dimensions; the calculator narrows each to the finish you pick. HomeAdvisor's overall average is $6,400 (range $2,700 to $14,500); Fixr's is $5,184 for 24 by 24 ft at 5 in with a broom finish (range $3,460 to $6,910).

Thickness

A driveway is 4 in at minimum; Fixr recommends 5 in or more for heavy vehicles, and HomeAdvisor 6 to 8 in. The calculator prices extra thickness as extra concrete only, at Fixr's $110 per cubic yard: 6 in instead of 4 in adds 2.47 cubic yards to the 400 sq ft slab, about $270, for $4,250 in total. Ask your contractor whether thicker slabs also change the rebar or base.

What else can be on the bill

Removing an old driveway costs $1 to $4 per sq ft (Fixr) and sealer $1 to $2 per sq ft; with both, the 400 sq ft example is about $5,600. An apron or curb cut at the street is $1,530 to $4,320 and a heated snow-melt driveway adds $3,000 to $8,700 (HomeAdvisor). Reinforcement is part of a good slab: work it out with the rebar calculator, and plan the layout and slope with the driveway calculator and the driveway slope calculator.

Concrete or asphalt

If you are weighing the two surfaces, the asphalt calculator works out the asphalt tonnage so you can ask for a matching quote.

DIY or a pro

A driveway is a big pour with a short working time: you need forms, a gravel base, a helper or two, a truck that can reach and a finisher. Turn on I pour and finish it myself to see the materials-only price, about $2,000 here. Delivery of ready-mix is $110 per cubic yard plus about $60 a load (Fixr). Small jobs and paths are realistic for a DIYer; a full driveway usually is not.

Permit

Many towns require a permit for a new driveway or a curb cut, and an apron is often done to the city's spec. Neither guide gives a fee, so none is priced; call the building or public works department.

Sealing every few years is what the driveway sealer calculator sizes. For a slab elsewhere, price it with the concrete cost calculator. If the problem is a sunken slab or a cracked house foundation rather than a new pour, the foundation repair cost calculator prices slabjacking and crack repair.
