That is $12 to $14 per sq ft for the steel, $7 to $12 for the crew and $5 to $20 for the slab.
How the metal building cost is calculated
A pre-engineered steel building arrives as a kit: primary frame, roof and wall panels, trim and fasteners. The calculator adds what it takes to stand one up:
- Steel kit: $12 to $14 per sq ft (Metal Building Outlet, February 2024, for 30 x 40 and 40 x 60 ft buildings).
- Slab: $5 to $20 per sq ft. Metal Building Outlet says $15 to $20, General Steel $10 to $15, BuildingsGuide $6 to $14; the typical is $12.
- Erection: $7 to $12 per sq ft (General Steel, Metal Building Outlet), typical $9.50.
- Delivery: $5,000 to $15,000 (HomeAdvisor's steel building page, June 2026).
- Grading: $1,300 to $5,300 (HomeAdvisor); permits $500 to $5,000 (HomeAdvisor, BuildingsGuide).
- Doors: overhead $800 to $3,500 and walk-in $200 to $1,000 (HomeAdvisor).
- Insulation: $1,100 to $2,500 (HomeAdvisor), off by default.

Kit, slab and erection alone come to $41,400. Metal Building Outlet puts most people's basic 30 x 40 ft building at $40,800 to $55,200, and a basic 40 x 60 ft building at $81,600 to $110,400; the calculator's $82,800 for the same three items at 40 x 60 ft is inside that range too.

Per square foot the price drops with size because delivery, grading and permits are close to fixed. The steel itself is a constant $13.
Kit only, or a full build?
Untick the slab, delivery and grading to price what a kit supplier quotes: $15,600 for the 30 x 40 ft steel and $11,400 for the erection. Kit quotes differ in what they include (anchor bolts, doors, insulation, the lift that raises the frame), so ask what is in a quote before you compare it with this estimate.
What raises the price
- Slab and site. A thicker slab, footings for a heavy frame or a sloped lot can push the concrete past $20 per sq ft.
- Snow and wind loads. The engineering for your location sets the steel weight, and heavier frames cost more.
- Doors and insulation. Large roll-up doors and spray foam insulation each add thousands.
- Erection labor. Putting the kit up yourself removes the $9.50 per sq ft line but needs equipment and at least a small crew.
Permits
A metal building is a permitted structure in most places. The kit maker's stamped drawings for your snow and wind load are what the permit office asks for, and a slab that carries the frame usually needs an inspection before the pour.
