Dining table length = seats per side × 24 in, so six seats take a 72 × 36 in table, and the room needs 36 in of clearance around it, which makes a room of at least 12 × 9 ft. Going the other way, a 12 × 14 ft dining room with 36 in of clearance holds a table up to 96 in long: eight seats.
How the dining table size is calculated
Two rules of thumb do all the work: 24 in of table edge per person, and clearance around the table for chairs.
Table length = seats per long side × 24 in; room needed = table size + 2 × clearance; round diameter = seats × 24 in ÷ π
Retreat Home advises at least 24 in of table edge per place setting and at least 36 in between the table edge and the nearest wall or furniture, so a chair can be pulled out and someone can pass behind it. The National Kitchen & Bath Association gives three clearances behind a seated diner: 32 in when nobody walks behind, 36 in to edge past and 44 in to walk past. The calculator offers all three.
Worked example: seats for a rectangular table
Six seats, three on each long side, 24 in each: 3 × 24 = 72 in long. Width 36 in, the least for two diners facing each other with dishes between them. With 36 in of clearance the room must be 72 + 72 = 144 in (12 ft) by 36 + 72 = 108 in (9 ft). Switch to 44 in of clearance so a person can walk behind the chairs and the same table needs 160 × 124 in, about 13 ft 4 in by 10 ft 4 in.
How many seats for each table size
Rectangular table, 36 in wide, 24 in per person, 36 in of clearance:

Retreat Home's own chart is more generous because it counts chairs at the ends: 4 ft seats 4, 5 to 6 ft seats 6, 7 ft seats 8 and 9 ft or more seats 10 or more. Use the space-per-person field to test 28 or 30 in for a roomier table.
Round dining table size
Around a circle the edge is π times the diameter, so seats × 24 in ÷ π gives the diameter: 4 seats need 31 in, 6 seats 46 in, 8 seats 61 in and 10 seats 76 in. Retreat Home's chart is looser: 4 ft round for 4 to 6, 5 ft for 6 to 8 and 6 ft for 8 to 10. Round tables also need no room for corners, so they suit a square dining room.
Dining room table size by room
The second mode starts from the room and finds the largest table. With a 36 in width and 24 in per person:

Retreat Home lists 8 × 10 ft as a small dining room (3 to 4 ft table), 10 × 12 ft as medium and 12 × 14 ft or more as large. A table wider than 36 in only helps if the width also fits with the clearance on both sides.
